Bringing Science to Life Through Hands-On Discovery

Writer: Osvaldo SalazarOsvaldo Salazar

Walk into Tim Myers’ 4th-grade classroom at Premier Arts Academy in Elkhart, IN and you’ll immediately feel the energy of students fully immersed in hands-on science.  Tim has created an environment where learning is hands-on, curiosity is encouraged, and every student is an active participant in their own discovery.

"Doing science is SO much better than watching movies!"

As students explore the GLC Unit: Nature’s Architect, diving into the lesson Using Senses to Survive they investigate how animals rely on their sense of touch to gather critical information about their environment, and process the information to enhance survival.

With sleeves rolled up, and curiosity piqued students reached into a mystery bag of objects, relying only on their sense of touch to identify and describe what they feel.

Each object sparks excitement as students carefully record their observations in their Scientist Notes, filling data tables with detailed descriptions and predictions in their Student Data Notebooks. With each discovery, they connect their findings to how animals process sensory information to enhance survival.

As a champion for teacher-driven, student-focused learning, Tim’s passion for science education is clear. His classroom is filled with laughter, discussion, and deep engagement as students test, observe, analyze, and debate their discoveries.

"GLC is great! It’s not just science from a book—it’s all hands-on! My favorite part? The lessons are the perfect size, the flow from start to finish is seamless, and the way everything builds across the year fits perfectly with our standards."

With GLC, science isn’t just something students read about—it’s something they do, explore, and experience firsthand!

“We have found that GLC isn’t just science out of a book, it’s all hands-on!”

With GLC, you can even participate remotely! A student who couldn’t be in class joined the lesson virtually, following along with classmates, making predictions, and engaging in discussions just as if they were in the room. GLC makes hands-on learning accessible to all students, wherever they are.

Mr. Myers embodies what it means to be an exceptional educator—passionate, innovative, and dedicated to student success. In his classroom, every child experiences the joy of discovery.

Thank you, Tim! For igniting curiosity, inspiring critical thinking and shaping the next generation of scientists.
