Out of This World Learning!

Step into Mr. Mike Paniccia’s 6th-grade classroom, and you’ll quickly see that science isn’t just taught—it’s experienced! During a Our Solar System lesson from the Grade Level Certified (GLC) curriculum, students weren’t just learning about space—they were reading, writing, analyzing, and creating like real scientists on a mission.

The adventure began when students sculpted their own asteroids from play dough, beads, foil, and paper clips. It was part art, part engineering, and lots engagement.

Seeing the student’s curiosity skyrocket, Mr. Paniccia extended the learning, turning excitement into exploration. Students dove into reading passages about asteroids, highlighting key facts and jotting notes in their Student Data Notebooks. They compared asteroids and planets using self-made data charts, seamlessly blending science content with literacy and critical thinking.

“I like that I can take home the science project and show my sister.”

The true strength of this classroom lies in the way GLC enables Mr. Paniccia to connect multiple subjects into one cohesive learning experience.. Math, reading, writing, and art all orbit around science. Students measured planetary orbits with compasses, applied math concepts for scale and proportion, and designed visually stunning Inner Planet models that combined precision with creativity.

Moments like these embody the heart of the GLC approach: teacher-driven, student-focused, hands-on, and fully integrated. Students were collaborating, problem-solving, analyzing data, and communicating their ideas—all while having an absolute blast!

Each step of the lesson reflected the power of integrated learning—students weren’t just absorbing information; they were applying it, connecting it, and seeing how the world of science touches every part of their education.
