Building Critical Thinking Skills and Creating Future Leaders of Elkhart
|
Preparing kids for their futures by improving access to STEM education is critical to ending the cycle of poverty. But students need more than content and instruction to succeed: they need to see the potential for their futures and a path forward to achieving it.
This is especially true in Elkhart County, where chronic low educational attainment and cyclical high unemployment have contributed to a firmly rooted cycle of poverty. Additionally, while local unemployment rates are currently low, employers cite difficulty with finding enough qualified skilled workers to fill manufacturing positions – which make up more than one-third of all jobs in the county (more than three times the national average). Elkhart County is not alone, however. National data about job growth and education attainment reflect the same issues. Their existence also reinforces the potential for success for those individuals and communities that promote STEM education opportunities. |
“ETHOS, with its inquiry-based approach to science education, has been a most valuable resource for STEM educators in the Michiana area. I have first- hand experience working with ETHOS on FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics competitions, and on organizing local FLL tournaments for crowds of enthusiastic children. I hope they will continue to be the premier resource for science education in this area for many years to come.”
