Idea Born in Elkhart...

From an idea born in Elkhart--
ASSET (ETHOS’ big sister), produces significant results

ASSET 4th-Graders Score Significantly Higher in Science, Math and Reading

In July of 1991 a team composed of a Bayer scientist and three Elkhart Community Schools staff members was selected to participate in a National Elementary Science Leadership Institute conducted by the National Sciences Resources Center of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academy of Science. The team returned with an updated perspective of science education and a idea to implement an elementary hands-on science program based on activity kits which they learned of while attending the leadership institute. Piloting in the Elkhart Community Schools occurred during the 91-92 school year. Bayer moved the US headquarters from Elkhart to Pittsburg but the Elkhart idea went with them. Reeny Davison, then a Bayer employee, visited with Patsy Boehler and Gene Hungate and toured some of the pilot sites in Elkhart. Reeny saw the benefit and returned to Pittsburg where ASSET was born. The rest is a happy story and today’s results are impressive.
